The GHT Trek (Great Himalaya Trail) reaches altitudes above 4000 meters, taking trekkers through rugged terrains, remote valleys, and stunning high passes. It’s one of India’s most challenging and rewarding Himalayan adventures for seasoned trekkers. The Great Himalaya Trail is simply the longest, highest trekking route there is. It is a 4,500 km network. It starts in Pakistan and ends in Bhutan. The path is split into many smaller treks. You can pick your part by country, region, or how long you want to walk.
It goes through five countries: Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. The change in the land is big. You will walk through green valleys. But you will also pass small, remote villages. You meet different cultures and hear new languages all the time.
The GHT in India is massive. It connects the whole northern mountain range. It goes from Arunachal Pradesh to Kashmir. You just choose which sections you want to link up.
Trekking in Uttarakhand is known for being some of the best in the Himalayas. People remember these trips for years. We made a special Great Himalaya trek just for the Garhwal area. This is your chance to really explore the Garhwal Himalayas. You get to see it deeply. The route covers many famous passes and valleys. It is a true immersion into the high mountain culture and wilderness.
Here you will start from Sankri and cover Har ki Dun, Hata Valley, Borasu Pass, Ruinsara Lake, Bali Pass, Base camp of Black Peak, Dodital, Darwa pass, Dayara Bugyal and Gangotri, all in one go.
Sankri is a small village in the Himalayas. It is in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, about 1,950 meters high. People use Sankri to start treks like Har Ki Dun and Kedarkantha. The village has great mountain views. It has a local culture and wooden houses. Trekkers see quiet valleys and thick pine forests. You can also spot wildlife. Swargarohini and Black Peak surround this small place. It offers adventure and real Himalayan hospitality.
Osla is a mountain village located high up. It sits at about 2,500 meters in the Govind National Park. The village is old. It is famous for its wooden buildings. They have a temple there that is centuries old. People say it honors Duryodhana from the Mahabharata. Osla still has its old customs. They wear traditional clothes and live a simple farm life. You see terraced fields and many wildflowers. They tell stories passed down through families. It feels like the modern world never reached this spot.
Gangad sits high on a steep cliff. It is about 2,400 meters up on the Har Ki Dun trek. The views of the valley are great. Its wooden houses, stone paths, and fields look like they are hanging over the Tons river. Life here is slow. The villagers still follow old ways. They are nice to trekkers. Gangad is quiet and isolated. It shows you the strong and beautiful way people live in the Himalaya.
Har Ki Dun is a famous valley. People call it the "Valley of Gods." It sits about 3,500 meters up. Snow peaks and green meadows are all around it. The Supin river runs right through. Old stories say the Pandavas walked this trail to get to heaven. The valley is lovely. It has fields full of flowers. You see small streams from glaciers. Unique birds live here. It just feels old and peaceful.
Hata Valley provides a quiet rest stop in the midst of the journey to Har Ki Dun and is a shining example of the sublime magnificence of the Himalayan mountains. It’s a break in the journey where hikers can savour the untouched scenery and find peace and serenity that defines the area.
Nature has crafted an iced monument – The Jaundhar Glacier, that holds a mesmerizing view. The earth’s timeless artistry shows up in a majestic manner as it reminds us as trekkers as trekkers cross through this freezing wonderland, the massive glacier.
Ruinsara Lake is a beautiful lake made by a glacier. It is located in the Uttarkashi district. The lake sits right at the base of both Black Peak and the Swargarohini range. The area is special because of the many wildflowers that grow there in summer. The lake is considered very peaceful. It is a perfect, quiet place to stop and camp. Old local stories say the Pandavas took this specific route when they walked on their final journey to heaven.
Bali Pass is a high mountain pass in Uttarakhand. It is a tough trek. The pass connects Sankri and other Himalayan valleys.You see great views of snow peaks and open meadows. Trekkers have to climb up steep trails. They also go down on rough ground. The pass opens up remote areas. These places have a lot of nature and Himalayan culture. People who like adventure and quiet trails go here.
Black Peak is 6,387 meters high. It stands near Sankri, Uttarakhand. This is a very hard climb. It includes crossing glaciers, rock climbing, and walking up snow slopes.The trip starts at Sankri village. You pass Ruinsara Tal lake. Then you reach the Kyarkoti base camp. This camp is at the foot of Swargarohini peak. From the top, you get wide views of the Himalayas. You can see peaks like Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch. The whole trip takes 15 to 18 days. It is a mix of hard technical climbing and beautiful nature.
Swargarohini is a huge mountain. Hindu stories say the Pandavas brothers climbed it to reach heaven. It is in the Garhwal Himalayas.Many people hike here. The trails cross thick forests, open fields, and glaciers. The peaks rise up quickly and look very high. The views are incredible.This place has a spiritual history. People who want culture and adventure should come here.
Hanuman Chatti is a spiritual base camp located on the route to Gulabi Kantha. It hosts a revered temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and serves as a resting spot for trekkers. Surrounded by pine forests and mountains, it offers a peaceful atmosphere, blending religious significance with nature.
Dodital is a pristine high-altitude lake surrounded by thick forests and alpine meadows. Situated at 2,660 meters, it is both a trekking destination and pilgrimage site, believed to be the birthplace of sage Durvasa. The serene lake reflects the surrounding peaks, making it a tranquil retreat for nature lovers.
Assi Ganga is a scenic river flowing through dense forests in Uttarakhand, originating near Dodital. It offers trekking routes along its banks dotted with temples, waterfalls, and wildflower meadows. The river's crystal-clear waters add to the spiritual charm of the region.
Darwa Pass connects different Himalayan valleys in Uttarakhand and serves as a challenging trekking route. Known for its rugged terrain, the pass offers spectacular views of surrounding snow-capped peaks and dense forests, making it a rewarding experience for adventure enthusiasts.
Devi Kund is a glacial lake famed for its crystal-clear waters and religious importance. Located at a high altitude, it is surrounded by scenic mountains and alpine flora. The lake hosts an annual religious fair, drawing pilgrims and trekkers alike who admire its natural beauty and spiritual ambiance.
Dayara Bugyal is a vast alpine meadow in Uttarakhand, known for its lush green grasslands and panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. It is ideal for trekking, camping, and nature walks during the summer months when wildflowers bloom abundantly.
Raithal is a small village nestled amidst verdant landscapes, serving as a gateway to multiple trekking trails. The village is known for its peaceful rural life, traditional homes, and close-knit community, offering cultural insights and hospitality to visitors.
Gangotri is a sacred town in Uttarakhand, famous for the Gangotri Temple, which marks the origin of the revered Ganges River. Pilgrims visit for religious purposes, while trekkers use it as a base for glacier expeditions including Gaumukh.
Chirbasa is a pine forest campsite on the trek to Gaumukh. It provides a serene resting place amid towering trees and tranquil surroundings, preparing trekkers for higher altitudes ahead.
Bhojabasa is a rugged campsite near the Gangotri glacier, serving as a base for further ascents to Gaumukh and Tapovan. It is known for its tough terrain and dramatic views of surrounding glaciers and peaks.
Gaumukh is the glacial source of the Bhagirathi River, the main tributary of the Ganges. It holds immense spiritual significance and is a major pilgrimage site. Surrounded by snow and ice, the region offers breathtaking landscapes and challenging trekking routes.
Tapovan is a meadow high up in the mountains. It is near Gaumukh. It has amazing views of glaciers and famous peaks. You can see mountains like Mt. Shivling and Mt. Bhagirathi. People like to come here for meditation. They also camp here. Mountaineering groups set up base camps here too.
Mount Shivling is a famous, sharp peak in the Indian Himalayas. It is in the Garhwal area of Uttarakhand, close to the Gangotri Glacier. The mountain is very sacred to Hindus because its distinct, pyramid shape looks like the symbol of Lord Shiva. It is about 6,543 meters high. It is known as a beautiful but very hard mountain to climb. Many people trek to Tapovan meadow, which is its base camp, just to get a great view of this iconic mountain.
The Bhagirathi massif with name Bhagirathi 1, 2, 3. It stands near Gangotri Glacier. It looks very massive, the group of three peaks covered in snow. It looks godly. People also climb Mt Bhagirathi as it is very challenging to conquer.
