History of Dodital Darwa Top Yamunotri Trek

  • Dodital Lake: Dodital Lake was named after the local term for trout fish- 'Dodi'. It is a serene and mysterious lake. It's one of the very few homes to the elusive Himalayan trout fish. Encircled by thick deodar forests, Dodital springs forth from the natural sources of the Asi Ganga River. Dodital is believed to be the birth place of Lord Ganesha. As per mythology, Goddess Parvati created Ganesha here at the bank of the lake from the dirt of her body while she was bathing. When Lord Shiva returned, Ganesha stopped him from entering not knowing who he was. In anger Lord Shiva severed the head of Ganesha but later he realised his mistake and restored Ganesha’s head by replacing the head of an elephant. Thus Lord Ganesha was blessed by Lord Shiva with wisdom and known as a God of removing obstacles.
  • Darwa Top: Darwa Top or Pass is a high-altitude pass (around 4,150 m) which connects Dodital Valley to Yamunotri. In ancient stories, it was believed to be one of the high Himalayan routes used by sages and yogis while moving to Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath. It is also associated with Pandavas who passed through this route on their way to Swargarohini.
  • Yamunotri: Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River and the Abode of Goddess Yamuna is situated in Uttarkashi at an altitude of 3,293 m on the western side of the Banderpoonch Peak. River Yamuna is believed to be the daughter of Sun God and twin sister of Lord Yama, the God of Death. Here you will see ancient temples, numerous lakes and natural hot springs. Next to the Kund, devotees offer prayers to a sacred rock slab named Divya Shila. Following this ritual, they perform pooja to the ebony idol of Goddess Yamuna. The shrine of Yamunotri is one of Uttarakhand's four mini pilgrimages.
