Things To Carry For The Himalayan Trek - Essential Trekking Checklist

Nowadays, trekking in the Himalayas has become one of the best ways to escape the crowds. Walking towards the Himalayas feels like walking towards yourself. However, you can only gain the best experience out of every trek if you carry all the essentials. If you don’t have the required trekking gear, the trek can test your limits. Travelling and trekking are not the same. While travelling to famous destinations, you can get things easily. But Himalayan treks are different. In most of the Himalayan treks, you will be cut off from the world. If you want to experience the unparalleled views and cultures at their best, make a good Himalayan trek packing list.

As a beginner in Himalayan trekking, a person can have lots of mixed thoughts. One of the major concerns is the weather. Even if you trek in the summer, nights are cold. In some of the treks, especially in Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, the temperature can dip to 0 degrees or even less. But if you have covered the essential trekking checklist, you are good to go.

Things to check while looking for trekking gear

Trekkers require a lot of sense while packing. Your backpacking packing list will affect your comfort and safety. To get the best experience, your journey starts with the correct trekking gear. Whether you are buying or renting the gear, you should make the right choice.

  • Fashion?? Nah, Function!

Remember, “All That Glitters Is Not Gold.”  We often get attracted to gear that might look good on us. But if it is not functioning well, it is not worth it. Before you buy any trekking gear like a jacket or a bag, make a checklist. Read about the material used, check all the reviews and ratings. You can check whether the material is breathable or not, waterproof or not. Every small detail can compromise your experience.

  • Fit and comfort

If your gear is uncomfortable, especially boots, you are done. Look for the trekking gear that does not restrict your movements. Wrong bags or wrong shoes can make your journey very harsh. Test the straps or the backpacks, look for ventilation, check the trekking socks, etc. If you are comfortable, you are good to go.

  • Weight or durability?

The weight of your trekking gear matters. Every gram can count on long mountain treks. In the Himalayan region, you have to carry your backpacks on your own. If the bag weighs too much, your posture and balance will not be in perfect condition. But again, weight is not everything. You should also look for durability. If you are carrying a lightweight jacket, it may not provide you with the required warmth in the snow. Your must-have trekking equipment should provide you with good support throughout the trek.

  • Weather essentials

In the Himalayas, you might see all kinds of weather in a single day. Your day may start with the sun and end with snow. In summer, trekking is easier as the temperature usually ranges on the positive side. But winter can be harsh. Above all, you also have to pack for the rain. Just 30 minutes of rain can ruin your trekking gear. Whether you are trekking in the summer or winter, don’t forget about the rain.

  • Cost vs value

If you check the Himalayan trek packing list, all the items are expensive. From simple trekking boots to tents, everything is pricey. As a first-time trekker, you need to buy almost everything. For easy treks, you don’t need expensive gear. But buying cheap gear can break easily. And finding new gear on the trek is very difficult. Always prioritize the must-have trekking equipment- your boots. After boots, look for good-quality jackets and backpacks. For other items, instead of buying cheap stuff, consider rental. Buy them only if you often go on treks.

Himalayan Trek Packing List For Summer

Trekking in the summer is pure magic. In long treks, you often start with lush green trees and end with snow-covered mountains. Most of the time, the weather is so pleasant, and the temperature always feels good. For the beginners, a backpacking packing list is so simple. Have a smart packing list, and you are good to go.

  • Backpack

You need a good backpack to carry all your items. Get a good quality rucksack with 40- 60L capacity. Most of the time, you have to carry your bag, so buy a bag that is comfortable and padded. Look for a bag that has good chest support and waist straps. Always choose a bag with a built-in rain cover. If you are going on a summit trek or short hike, carry a daypack. Buy a bag with a 10- 20L capacity. You can leave your rucksack at the base camp and pack the essentials in the daypack.

  • Clothes

In summer, daytime can feel hot, and night can be very cold. Always start packing with a base layer. Carry 2-3 moisture-wicking T-shirts for a week's trek. For the night, pack 1 pair of thermals. Now for the mid layer, pack a 1 fleece or down jacket along with 1 light sweater. For the outer layer, carry a waterproof and windcheater jacket. For bottoms, get 2 quick-dry trekking pants. Don’t forget 3-4 pairs of undergarments. For rain, pack a poncho that can cover your whole body along with your rucksack.

  • Footwear

Your boots are the most essential trekking gear. You can borrow other gear from fellow trekkers, but you can’t borrow the boots. Always buy a good quality ankle-high and waterproof boots. If you have a new trekking boot, wear it daily for a week before starting the trek. It will make your feet comfortable in the trekking boots. Also, you will get to know whether the boots are good for trekking or not. Now carry 3-4 pairs of woolen socks. For the evening at the basecamp, bring 1-2 pairs of cotton socks and a pair of sandals/flip-flops.

  • Toiletries and other accessories

In most of the Himalayan treks, you don’t get to bathe. Don’t carry shampoo or other bathing items. Carry a biodegradable soap, toothbrush, and small toothpaste. Back a toilet paper roll and a quick-dry towel. You will also need lip balm and sunblock. Carry a good moisturiser and hand sanitizer. You can add a few other items to your trekking gear, such as a headlamp, a pocket knife, and zip locks for electronics and documents. Add a small first aid kit that includes painkillers, band-aids, antacids, blister pads, and ORS.

Summer essential trekking checklist

You need to carry a few extra things for the summer trek that can protect your body from the sun. Carry a full-sleeve shirt if the sun is very harsh. You can carry an extra cotton T-shirt for the base camp. If you are trekking near rivers, you can carry lightweight shorts.

Optional backpacking packing list

After packing all the essential items, check for the available space on your rucksack. If you have enough space, you can carry a power bank, travel diary, camera, etc. Remember, every item is adding more weight to the bag. Pack only those items that won’t make your back very bulky.

Must-Have Trekking Equipment For Winter Trekking

Winters in the Himalayas are majestic but harsh. You have to pack a lot for a winter trek. The temperature can drop to minus 20 degrees in some areas. To protect yourself from the cold, add a few more items to your summer Himalayan trek packing list. Add a down jacket that can keep you warm in sub-zero temperatures. Get two additional fleece layers for extra layering. Pack a good woolen sweater or hoodie for sleeping. You will need two pairs of gloves: woolen gloves and waterproof gloves. Pack a balaclava along with a woolen cap. Don’t forget 2-3 good-quality thermal socks. You will need 2 sets of thermal innerwear and add a good fleece trekking pants. Add waterproof pants or gaiters to your trekking gear.

  • Additional Trekking Gear For Solo Trekkers

Plan a solo trek only in the Himalayas if you have done some treks already. When you are trekking with a trekking company, you have to carry a few things only. But for solo trekking, add some more things to the must-have trekking equipment.

  • Tent, sleeping bag, and cooking essentials

Buy a good-quality lightweight tent that can keep you warm and dry in sub-zero temperatures. Pack a temperature-appropriate sleeping bag. Pack a few snacks and dry meals for the trek. If you are planning to cook for yourself, carry a portable stove and fuel. Don’t forget to carry water.

  • Navigation Tools and Communication

Your Google map may not work everywhere. Download offline GPS apps like AllTrails, etc. Don’t rely only on the app; look for a paper map and a compass. You should also take a printout of the route and emergency contact numbers. Carry at least two power banks as the battery drains very fast in the Himalayas. You can also add a solar charger to your trekking gear.
