Why Trekking with Himalaya Shelter Matters

By trekking with Himalaya Shelter, you're selecting a company that places a high priority on the safety and comfort of people going on a trek through the Himalayas and their entire experience. With more than 12 years of experience operating and running over 350 treks every year, we understand the interaction between the terrain, weather, culture, and environmental variables associated with high elevations in the mountains.

While we could focus on offering trekking packages as a simply transactional process, we believe that meaningful journeys must be created by combining safety with local insight and responsible trekking practices; this commitment is what makes us a trusted trekking partner and among the leading trekking companies in Uttarakhand.

Our Trekking Safety Standards

Himalaya Shelter takes the safety of all trekkers seriously and ensures safety is an integral part of the way we operate on treks. We incorporate safety into our operations through various policies and procedures:

  • Trekking with certified guides who have received specialized training in mountaineering, safe high-altitude expeditions, rescues and first aid for wilderness areas.
  • Daily monitoring of trekkers' health through a systematic approach that includes SpO₂ levels and pulse rates of each trekker on each day.
  • Implementation of protocols for geographical evacuations and management of risks associated with extreme conditions, such as being at high altitudes, yet allows us to respond quickly.

We have taken into account our established safety policy & procedures for trekking according to National Safety Standards throughout India, maintaining and upholding the health and safety standards required for mountain treks and ensuring the same at every stage of the trek.

High-Quality Gear, Equipment & Medical Support

We have a variety of trekking gear & equipment available that we have selected for use in mountain conditions – generally speaking, this would generally include tents, sleeping bags, mattresses, safety equipment and oxygen reserves at higher elevations.

Our medical support system is well equipped with complete first-aid kits and includes oxygen cylinders when applicable and established protocols for recognizing and treating early signs of altitude sickness, fatigue, or any other medical issue that may happen during your trek. Each trek leader carries a small amount of medical supplies and is trained to react immediately to any potential medical emergency.

Small Group Sizes & Personalised Attention

  • Our small groups are made up of 8-12 trekkers for many great reasons.
  • We monitor the health and pace of each trekker better than with a larger group.
  • They allow for personalised interaction between the trekkers and their guides or support staff.
  • They create an environment where each trekker will have an opportunity to ask questions and learn while they are on the trail.
  • They create a smaller footprint on our environment and less crowding on shared trails.

And since we have a smaller number of trekkers, our team is able to offer more detailed personal attention to every one of our trekkers, from check-ins and determining acclimatisation pacing to everything else and this is reflected in the many positive comments our trekkers have left about us.

Our Amazing Meals & On-Trail Dining Experience

In order to provide clients with the energy needed to trek in high altitudes as well as support local communities, we create nutritious rice-based vegetarian meals, cooked fresh each day on the trail. We strive to provide all food on the trail using local ingredients; additional items unique to the Himalayan region, including chapati made from ramdana (millet) or manduwa (wheat), will be added whenever available, along with local varieties of kandali (stinging nettle) or dhunu (garlic). Depending on the season, additional fruit varieties, including apricots, apples, peaches, jamun, and tenni (cherries), will be included. Our goal is to provide as much cultural experience and nutritional diversity in our meals as possible while trekking through the Himalaya.

Our Transportation Services

Effective transport logistics create an environment conducive to a great travel experience. By employing local drivers who are experienced in driving in hilly areas and through changing road conditions due to weather/seasonal factors, Himalaya Shelter makes available a wide range of alternative means for travelling between urban locations (Rishikesh, Dehradun) and trailheads that are located far from city limits, i.e., on the mountains or near riverbanks.

In addition to providing shared transfers from urban areas (Rishikesh, Dehradun) to remote locations (mountains or riverbanks), we offer private vehicles like Inova and Tempo (traveller) for individual transport to/from your trek destination, as well as after your trek has been completed, we provide transportation facilities in all of our treks, and there are no any additional charges. As a part of your trekking logistics, effective transport will greatly enhance your overall trekking experience.

What Our Trekkers Love

Feedback from trekkers who have used Himalaya Shelter shows the level of trust and confidence that people have in the company. On social media sites such as TripAdvisor and Google Reviews, trekkers pinpoint a common theme:

"I did the Buran Ghati private trek in September 2025 as a solo traveller with Himalaya Shelter. It was an unforgettable trek with stunning, highly varied landscapes every single day, jaw-dropping views and the opportunity to witness local life, since many shepherds use this route to drive their herds down to the village for winter. Better still, the Buran Ghati trek remains a hidden gem and I had all this mostly to myself.

A big part of the incredible experience was the Himalaya Shelter trekking team, who were committed to ensuring I was safe, comfortable and enjoying every moment. First of all, I was very lucky to have Bachan Rana himself as my trekking guide. Having grown up in the mountains and founding Himalaya Shelter, Bachan is an excellent conversationalist and experienced trekking guide with so many stories to tell. Meanwhile, the cook, Bablu, provided delicious meals (I still remember the spring rolls!) throughout the trek. He also worked closely with the mule man to do the hard work of pitching the tents, packing up, loading and unloading the mules. The team looked after me really well with high-quality equipment – my home for 5 nights was a large North Face tent and a very warm sleeping bag. Finally, Himalaya Shelter was very flexible in customizing my itinerary before and after the trek to my requirements and also helping to book good hotels along the way.

Thank you so much Himalaya Shelter for an amazing adventure! I will be back to do another trek…now if I can just decide which one 😊 - Li Wen, Singapore "check here"

"Exceptional Family Trek Experience with Himalaya Shelter

Oct 2025, We recently completed the Phulara Ridge trek in Uttarkashi with Himalaya Shelter, and it turned out to be one of our most memorable adventures. Having done family treks across Sikkim for the past five years, we’re used to a well-coordinated team, quality equipment, and a relaxed pace. This was our first trek outside Sikkim – and that too without our usual crew – so expectations were high.

Right from the start, Bachan Rana and his team impressed us with their professionalism and warmth. They were quick to respond, understood exactly what we wanted, and planned the trek as well as our post-trek holiday to perfection.

The trek itself was beautifully organised. We began with a night at their Sankri guesthouse, where we met our wonderful support team. Throughout the trek, they went above and beyond to ensure our comfort, safety, and well-being, supported by excellent equipment and thoughtful planning.

Special thanks to:

Rajender ji (Orri Mama) and Simran, our trek leads – they truly made the journey extraordinary. Mama’s deep local knowledge, cheerful energy, and unshakeable commitment kept us motivated through every climb, while Simran’s gentle presence, patience, and instinctive care brought balance and calm to the group. Their teamwork ensured we felt safe, cared for, and always in great spirits.

Tirpan, Bablu, and Goldy, the trek’s true backbone – handling everything from cooking to camp setup, logistics, and managing the mules/horses. Their versatility, ever-smiling faces, and delicious food made each campsite feel like home.

Deepak, our driver – patient, reliable, and non-intrusive, ensuring every long drive was smooth and relaxed.

All in all, Himalaya Shelter delivered an outstanding experience – professional, personal, and full of heart. This marks the beginning of our adventures with them, and we’ll surely be back soon for the next one. - TusharDX check here."

How We Conduct Pre-Trek Briefings & Weather-Informed Decisions

A pre-trek briefing contains a structured overview of an itinerary, route, altitude awareness, acclimatisation strategy, safety guidelines, emergency protocols, a gear check, and weather. The weather in the Himalayas can change very rapidly; therefore, we are continuously monitoring weather conditions via multiple reliable methods, both through forecast resources and satellite imagery, and base our decisions on route changes/pacing/restand safety of all individuals involved in the trek to ensure that we maintain a great trekking experience while preserving the safety of every participant.

Every trek begins with a structured pre-trek briefing covering:

  • Detailed itinerary and route overview
  • Altitude awareness and acclimatisation strategy
  • Safety guidelines and emergency protocols
  • Gear check and weather forecast
