This is the list of the best places to visit around Sankri. I personally tailored this list in the proximity of “Sankri” situated in Uttarakhand. This is a sleepy yet magnificent village to spend your holidays at! Sankri is a commencing point of various treks in the Himalayan ranges. The major treks are Kedarkantha, Har ki Dun, Bali Pass, Devasu Bugyal, and many more. As the title suggests ‘Best places to visit around Sankri’ this is an informative article providing information about major tourist attractions in proximity to “Sankri“
These are the major attractions in proximity to Sankri.
Sankri is a small hamlet resting at an altitude of 1950 Mtrs above sea level in Mori and Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is a part of Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. This village is considered as a base camp for numerous treks such as:
The above-mentioned Treks are only a part of many more treks commencing from “sankri”. This village is a perfect holiday resort to kick back and relax. Mountain panorama from the Himalaya shelter guest house as the sun rays of cracking dawn hit the towering peaks, they shimmer magnificently which would often take one’s breath away.
The “Sankri Market place” is an intriguing place to travel through. there are variety of suvouniers one could purchase. Apart from that, one could find all the trekking equipment for rent. They usually provide equipment for the trekkers on a daily rent basis.
This is a High-altitude frozen twin lake connected together. this is situated between sankri village and Kedarkantha peak. Located at an altitude of 2700 meters and being the first camp of the peak Kedarkantha, this lake has importance both historically and technically.
According to the legend lord shiva was the one who created this lake in order to quench his thirst while he was on his way to meditate at Kedarkantha summit.
The other one being regarding a local Shepard dropping his flute into the water and finding it later downstream which signifies the fact that the water body is connected by underground streams which gives it the name “Juda”
Technical aspect being this lake is the first campsite on the trekkers journey to peak Kedarkantha! this is a wonderful natural marvel where we get to slide over the frozen lake amidst a small patch of clearing in the forest. the natural ambiance here would be mind-bending and the first time I went to the campsite was the time I completely fell in love with the mountains!
Located at the Purola Tehsil of Uttarkashi district. It was initiated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and was named after the legendary freedom fighter “Govind Ballabh Pant” stretching from an altitude of 1,300 mts to 6,323 mts covering an area of 958 Km.
Govind Pashu Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a variety of flora and fauna along with diverse bird species. This is a haven for someone passionate about Bird watching.
This bio reserve host varied species of vegetation ranging from medicinal herbs of ayurveda to the juicy Rhododendron flower. one can enter this majestic homeland of varied species through various entry points such as Naitwar on Supin range and the town Dharkani.
Amidst the magnificent sanctuary rests Har ki doon Valley, also home to the endangered snow leopard species. enables us to set our sights on the legendary Swarga Rohini ranges. Har ki doon valley enables the trekkers to traverse along the legendary Supin river
Some of the magnificent species resting inside the forest are:
Bharal, Himalayan Monal, Bears, Musk deer, Black eagle, Golden eagle and many more!
Osla A 5000-year-old settlement located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, this village rests at an altitude of 2,590mts. Trekkers trek via the Osla village or traverse through it on their way back.
This village has its roots steeped into the epic of Mahabharata! also home to the temple dedicated to the legendary warrior Duryodhana. there are still no Propper electrical or internet services to this day. this is an isolated village.
The temple along with the rest of the village is a wonderful piece of traditional wooden architecture. we can still find the spectacular carvings depicting the ancient marvels of Mahabharata. the culture, the houses and the natives remind us of our roots and how far we progressed thanks to modernity.
The natives dwelling there make their living mainly of agriculture and handicrafts.
The origins of this village date Back to 3100 BEC. This thousand-year-old heritage is one we shouldn’t miss to embrace.
What’s the list of holidays kickbacks would be without a waterfall on the list? The Koregaon Waterfall is one of the isolated gems amidst the Uttarkashi region. this is an enchanting waterfall cascading amidst the forest studded region.
This waterfall rests, just 4Km away from the enchanting village of Sankri. one should traverse through the dense forests and a majestic trail. this is an ideal retreat from modernity with its tranquil ambiance.
kotgaon waterfall is surrounded with thick forests of pine, oak and rhododendron trees painting the whole experience green. not to mention the enchanting view of towering snow-capped peaks and rugged terrains.
This endeavour enables us to embrace the complete ambiance of Trekking, Picnicking and Photography altogether.
The silver lining of this journey would be Hidden caves! These were believed to be used by our ancestral sages and saints to meditate.
The above-mentioned places could be enjoyed within one or two days each. One can also opt for a Sankri Homestay to visit the places around Sankri. Every place has its own unique ambiance, its own culture, roots and different panoramic views. Embracing such isolated and hidden beauties would be the meaning of life ultimately.
