The Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek is a very beautiful and serene trek in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. Sunderdhunga means Valley of Beautiful Stones and as you walk through this valley you get to know the reason. The path leads you through deep forests, little villages in the mountain, wooden bridges, fresh glacier water in the rivers, and expansive open plains with high snow-covered mountains.
Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek is ideal to those people who are fond of nature and desire to be involved in a real mountain adventure, but not so much in a hurry. The camp sites are quiet and are also enclosed with high mountains and clear skies with stars at night. It is not only a trek, but an experience as well when one feels in touch with nature, as distant as the city and its traffic are. Sunderdhunga Basecamp is an excellent trek to have a peaceful and exciting Himalayan journey.
The Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek has a close relationship with the history of the ancient Kumaon mountain villages of Uttarakhand. The path was used long before the advent of trekking whereby local villagers and shepherds used the path to transport their cattle to high-altitude meadows in summer. These plains were lush with new grass and the rivers were supplying some clean glacier water. Trade and everyday village life were also significant to the valley.
The Sunderdhunga valley was used by the mountaineers in the early times of discovery of Himalayas as a base to go and climb the adjacent mountains such as Maiktoli and Panwali Dwar. The valley is not as busy as other known trekking sites; hence, this factor made it a quiet and natural place over a long period of time. Over time, trekking parties began to visit this land to enjoy its primal beauty, glaciers, and mountain top scenery.
Sunderdhunga is translated to Valley of Beautiful Stones, and the valley really appears to be magic. It is less busy, peaceful, and rich in nature. You pass by clear rivers, wooden bridges, green woods and open meadows. This trail is calm and untainted as opposed to very famous treks. Birds, running water and wind in the mountains can be heard.
The spectacular perspective of great Himalayan mountains is one of the greatest attractions of this trek. The beautiful mountains such as Maiktoli and Panwali Dwar can be seen clearly from the basecamp. It is a very special feeling to see these high snow-covered peaks this close by. The mountains appear to be different in the morning, evening light and at the sunrise they appear golden.
It is a trek that typically begins with small villages in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. You can observe the life of simple village, old wooden houses and the life of people living in a traditional manner. The villagers are friendly and hospitable.
In the trek, you pass by the streams of glaciers and rocky riverbeds with rare stones. The water is of glacial origin and appears very fresh and clean. When climbing higher, one can also see some of the glaciers in the vicinity of the base camp. It is a very serene view watching the river passing through the valley with huge mountains closing around it.
The Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek is rated as being moderate to strenuous. You should have good stamina and some trekking experience. Novices can do it, however, they are supposed to prepare beforehand. It is a rocky trail with narrow lanes and rough patches and hence you should walk slowly.
There are steep ascents and rocky trails in some parts of the trek. You will have to pass through little brooklets and walk upon loose stones. The snow patches around the basecamp may also occur during some seasons of the year. These sections must be taken with caution and with control.
The climate of the upper part of Uttarakhand may shift rather rapidly. Trekking may be difficult in case of sudden rain or cold winds. Due to this reason, warm clothes and protection against rain is highly necessary. The weather is a significant variable to the general challenge of this trek.
The Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek is a high-altitude trek where the higher you go, the lesser oxygen concentration is found. Others might get fatigued earlier or experience slight headache caused by high altitude. A slow pace, sufficient water intake, and adequate rest are helpful in the adjustment of your body.
The Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek is one of the best treks to do in summer. The weather is generally good during the day in the course of these months and the sky is normally clear. The snow that falls in the winter gradually begins to melt and the valley turns green. It has good mountain scenery where you can easily view mountain peaks such as the Maiktoli. The daytime is pleasant to walk about in, though nights at elevated camps are still cold.
The monsoon is not normally advisable in this trek. These are the months of heavy rainfall in the region of Uttarakhand. The path may be slippery and muddy as well as there is even a possibility of landslides in certain spots. Streams and rivers can be torrential and thus hard to cross. The valley is very green and beautiful especially in monsoon but this makes the question of safety a big issue.
Another good opportunity to visit Sunderdhunga Basecamp is in autumn. The air feels fresh and clean. The climate is not too cold but comfortable to do trekking. The valley is very beautiful with the combination of green and gold color. It is colder in the nights than it is in summer and warm clothes are essential.
The Sunderdhunga trekking in winter is extremely difficult. After the end of November the area gets snowfall and the trail can be covered with snow. The temperatures become extremely low particularly at night. During the winter seasons, there is a lot of snow that may cover the route. The season is not friendly to the novice trekkers unless they have the right winter equipment.
The Sunderdhunga Basecamp is located in the Bageshwar district. The nearest motorable road to the trek is Loharkhet.
Delhi to Haldwani: There are numerous direct buses to Haldwani. Or, direct trains to Haldwani are available.
Haldwani To Ranikhet: Take a direct bus or shared taxi to Ranikhet.
Ranikhet To Loharkhet: The shared taxis to Loharkhet are limited. Otherwise, get a private taxi to Loharkhet.
In the Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek, you are supposed to carry the clothes depending on the weather in the mountains. Higher regions of Uttarakhand have a tendency to change weather very fast and therefore, layering is essential. Bring 2-3 quick-dry t-shirts, 1-2 full sleeve warm clothes, a heavy jacket, and a waterproof jacket or poncho in case of rain.
Trekking pants, warm gloves, woolen hat, sun hat, and extra socks should be packed as well. A good pair of trekking shoes with a good grip is important since the path is made of rocks and is also uneven.
Some valuable personal and trekking possessions should also be taken along with clothes. You will need a backpack that includes rain cover. Always carry a torch or headlamp with spare batteries since evenings in the camp are too dark. You are also advised to carry the personal ID proof along with some cash. Light yet clever, as being overweight will cause one to walk slowly in this medium to difficult Himalayan trek
Among the most effective activities in Sunderdhunga, there is nothing to do but to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The valley is not so busy thus you can really relate to nature. Be close to the river, hear running water, experience the air of the mountains. The city is quiet, there is no noise, no traffic, only mountains. This calmness of the trek makes it a very special and cool experience of the mind.
There are lovely snow-covered mountains such as Maiktoli seen in the base camp region. Watch the mountains in the sunset and sunrise. You may sit down and have nothing to do. When one is standing before such tall Himalayan mountains, it is very powerful and inspiring.
Throughout the hike, you will be walking through glacier fed rivers and rocky riverbeds of rare stones. You may have little rests here and there along the brooks and put your hands into the cool, cool water. Depending on weather and safety, you may also venture further in the region of the glacier towards the base camp.
It is a moderate to hard trek and thus, by completing this trek you get a great sense of accomplishment. You feel proud when walking on rocky trails, crossing streams and getting to the basecamp. It makes you feel confident and leaves you with beautiful memories. The experience alone teaches patience, strength, and love for nature.
Sunderdhunga Basecamp Trek is moderate to challenging and thus you need to prepare your body prior to going there. Begin walking or jogging at least 3-4 weeks prior to the trek. You may as well train on the ability to climb stairs to enhance stamina. Good breathing capacity and strong legs will enable you to enjoy the trek rather than being too exhausted. The journey is also safer and more comfortable with the help of physical preparation.
Do not rush while trekking. Move slowly and take little breaks where necessary. The oxygen level in high altitude regions of Uttarakhand is low and therefore walking can get you exhausted very soon. Never leave your trek leader and stay behind. Gradual and gradual walking will enable your body to adapt to the altitude and minimize chances of illness.
A few sections of the trail are loose stones and little stream crossings. Be cautious and carry trekking poles when possible. Always run on the trail and never forget to check your step. Trails might be wet when it rains or during monsoon, thus, additional attention is required.
Discard plastic or waste on the trail. Honor the locals and their culture, keep the valley clean. Sunderdhunga is a tranquil and not so busy area and therefore the natural beauty should be preserved. Conscientious trekking makes the mountains safe for future travellers.
