Buda Madmaheshwar Trek Overview

Description  The Enchanting Himalayas has been known to be Shiva’s abode. “Shiva” the Indian deity has many names and forms. Madmaheshwar is yet another name of Shiva. A temple dedicated to this Avatar is located at an height of 3497 mts in Garhwal Himalayas and makes an excellent trekking destination as it offers magnificent views of the surrounding Chaukhamba peaks from the top of this mountain. One can reach Madmaheswar temple by trekking 16 kms from Ransi. The trail passes through enchanting Alpine meadows and dense greenery most time of the year. This temple is also significant in Hindu culture and is one of the temples visited in the Panch Kedar circuit. The camping experience at Madmaheshwar is fascinating for trekkers due to the surrounding green wooded forest on one side and gorgeous alpine meadows on the other with Chaukhamba snow clad peaks view being the highlight from this point.Chaukhamba is a mountain massif in the Gangotri Group of the Garhwal Himalaya. Chaukhamba has four summits, along a northeast-southwest trending ridge.

From Ransi village the Madmaheshwar trek is usually a 3-day 32-kilometer journey that ends at the Madhyamaheshwar temple and passes through picturesque surroundings.

If you travel by pony Madmaheswar is quite accessible in a single day. However give yourself an additional day to rest in between. From Uniana the trek route is 19 km long. To get there it would take at least two days.

Ukhimath is the first stop on the journey to Budha Madmaheshwar followed by Ransi the starting point and finally the temple itself.

For the purpose of escaping Bhima Lord Shiva split his body into five pieces. The locations where the Lords five parts manifested are known as the Panch Kedar. According to legend Madhyamaheshwar is where the Lords middle torso (madhya in Hindi means middle) first appeared.

The trip there is nevertheless very captivating because it offers beautiful views of a number of peaks including Kedarnath Neelkanth Trishul Kamet and Panchachuli across a small lake. Many devotees travel from far and wide to visit the hill temple of Budha Madmaheshwar.

By Road: From Delhi Haridwar Rishikesh or Dehradun you can take a direct bus to Ukhimath. Buses from Haridwar and Rishikesh leave early in the morning and are more frequent than those from Delhi and Dehradun. Ukhimath has excellent motorway access to Uttarakhands main destinations.

For those who are physically fit this moderate-to-difficult trek is perfect. It takes roughly five to six days to finish.
