Minkiani Pass Trek is a scenic trek in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. The trek is not crowded and offers some of the most beautiful views of the Dhauladhar ranges. Even the basecamp of the trek is quite sightful. The cool weather and local culture makes the Minkiani Pass trek more beautiful.
The trek starts from Mcleod Ganj which is known to have a Tibetan culture and serene atmosphere. Here, the ride gradually goes out of the streets and into the solitude of mountain trails. The level of difficulty is moderate, and therefore with proper preparation even one with simple fitness can attempt it. The weather is changeable even in the mountains and therefore trekkers require warm clothes and quality shoes. In general, Minkiani Pass Trek is an ideal choice when one wants to find a combination of nature, adventure and tranquility in one place, as it seems to be the secret of India where one can forget about the city life and listen to the Himalaya silence.
There is no written history of Minkiani Pass as are some of the well-known treks but it has always been an ancient mountain path of local villagers and shepherds. This trail was particularly used by shepherds during seasonal migration and they carried their sheep and goats to elevated grasslands during summer and back before heavy snowfall. Due to this frequent local usage, the trail gradually became an adventurer and trekker familiarity.
Throughout the years, the trekkers and traveling teams began to take the Minkiani Pass more seriously and gradually it became a familiar trek in the Dhauladhar region. The trek is still known as a hidden trail than the other popular Himalayan trails. It has a history more related to nature, local culture and life in the mountains than the great historical events. That is why hiking here is wild and unrefined - you are hiking along the same mountain trails that villagers and shepherds have been quietly walking on over the generations.
The magnificent view of the Dhauladhar mountain range is one of the most glamorous events of this trek. The further you go up the mountain the more the landscape begins to change and those snow-capped mountains begin to get nearer and nearer. The sunset and sunrise in the Dhauladhar range is so perfect.
Compared to extremely famous Himalayan treks, Minkiani Pass Trek is normally not crowded and tourist-free. It is a journey that is more serene and intimate whereby you can literally hear birds, flowing water, and the wind in the trees. You have time to experience nature without distraction and hurry. It is more like a secret path to follow in which you can literally forget about the life in cities and enjoy some quality moments with mountains, and that is not possible in the busy trekking paths.
Minkiani Pass Trek is the best combination of difficulty and ease. It is not too difficult, yet it is not too simple and that is why it is exciting to beginner mountain climbers who desire to have a real mountain experience. The trek to the pass has steep climbs, rocky paths and at times snow beds depending on the time of the year. This combination of efforts and success makes trekkers feel very much confident and successful when they finally get up to the top.
It is typically started at McLeod Ganj, a Tibetan-culture hill town and a serene atmosphere. Travelers will have the opportunity to visit cafes and local markets, as well as monasteries before or after the trek, which is also a cultural experience to the adventure. Such contrast of spiritual urban life and bare mountain climbing makes the whole journey more memorable, not only physical exercise but also cultural and emotional journey.

The nights tend to be extremely cold and up in elevations you may even find snow depending on the time of the year. Due to this fact, trekkers require warm-up clothing and rain covers. The weather change gives the slightest challenge and makes the experience exciting and real.
The higher you go the thinner is the air which makes you feel slightly out of breath or fatigued. The altitude is not very high but people who are new to mountains can face issues. This problem is normally overcome by walking slowly, consuming water, and taking a good rest.
The spring is the best time to plan Minkiani Pass Trek. Winter snow starts melting, the trees turn green, and wildflowers start blooming on the road. It is good for beginners as it is not as unsafe with less snow and the cold weather is not so tough. In general, in spring, one gets an ideal balance of beauty, comfort and adventure.
Late summer and monsoon can be very risky. The trail is fully green but there are high chances of landslides. The visibility can also decrease due to heavy clouds and fog. It is sometimes the season of choice by experienced trekkers who like lush greenery and do not mind rain but beginners are often discouraged. Rain gears and proper grip shoes are highly essential in the event of trekking during the season.
The next best time to undertake the trek is in autumn where the sky is largely clear and weather after the monsoon is stable. The air is clean, the humidity is low, and the mountain scenery is clear and extensive. The trees begin to turn golden and brown and it produces a very picturesque and serene atmosphere. Good shoes and warm clothes are the most significant items to bring along when making the Minkiani Pass Trek. Mountains are very chilly even during summer and are very chilly during the nights thus carry a warm jacket, thermal clothing, woolen cap, gloves and additional socks. A rain jacket is also necessary in the mountains. Get a comfortable backpack with rain cover and personal toiletries.
It is also advisable that you carry with you basic safety items and everyday use just in case you get into difficulties in the mountain. Have a little first-aid kit consisting of medicines for headache, cold, stomach, band-aids, and pain relief spray. It should have a flashlight or headlamp with additional batteries in case of night time or early morning walks.
Carry light snacks such as energy bars, dry fruits and chocolates in case of a long climb where you need immediate energy. A phone power bank, a trekking pole to maintain balance, a small notebook or a camera in case you want to keep memories may be useful as well. Avoid over packing - take only the essentials since a light bag would be much easier and pleasurable to carry around.
One of the most memorable experiences is camping. There are bright stars in the sky at night since the sky has no lights and no noises of the city. It is very special to sit close to your tent, talk to friends and to have simple food in a cold mountain atmosphere. The night is peaceful and cool due to the silence and cool breeze.
Bring a phone or a camera since the trail has a lot of natural beauty. It has many photo spots provided by forest paths, green meadows, small streams, and rocky mountains. It is also possible to go slow walks in nature, hear birds, and pay attention to the little flowers or trees on the path.
At times you can encounter isolated shepherds and villagers with their goats and sheep. Even a little smile or brief conversation can be a pleasant one. You experience in the mountains and simple life, which is quite unlike the city life. It introduces a human element to the adventure.
The serene atmosphere of the mountains is ideal in terms of thinking, journaling, or simply sitting a few minutes alone. Most trekkers tend to meditate, stretch or to write in a notebook. Fresh air and the absence of the noise helps to clean the mind and get rid of stress, so the trek is both physical and emotional as well as refreshing.
You should always have a slow and steady pace in the trek. Mountains are not a race. You can easily get exhausted or feel gasping in case you walk too fast. Have little breaks, drink plenty of water and don’t ignore your body. Slow walking also assists you in taking pleasure in scenery and saving your energy throughout the trip.
The weather in the mountains is very dynamic. Always check the weather before starting the trek. Weather can cause problems on the trek. If it is raining then you should wait. Start the trek when the weather conditions are favorable.
Good trekking shoes that have good grip are very crucial as trails are rocky and have steep ascends. Wear several clothes rather than a single heavy jacket and this way, you can easily change them when the weather is different. A rain jacket or a poncho should be always present since rain is likely to happen at any time in the mountains.
