The Himalayan Ranges are one of the best marvels of nature, it has enamoured the hearts and souls of people from around the globe and from all walks of life. Just the mere mention of the word ‘Himalayas’ induces so many feelings rushing through the veins. Himalayas are home to millions of people, thousands of plants, hundreds of species of animals, birds, mammals and even some of the highest peaks in the world.  It is also a very crucial source of natural resources like water on Earth.

The word ‘Himalaya’ is a Sanskrit word that translates as ‘Him’ meaning snow/frost and ‘alay’ meaning house/abode.

The Himalayan ranges pass through several countries including India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan and China. The length of the Himalayas Ranges would be approximately 2,400 km and at least 200 km wide. An interesting fact is, that the Himalayas are considered young mountains and they even grow at a rate of about 5 mm per year.

Highest Peaks of Himalayan Ranges

As you know, Himalayas are home to not one, but a few of the tallest peaks in the world. The highest of all is Mount Everest at an altitude of 8,848 meters. Mount K2 (8,611 m), Kangchenjunga (8,586 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Makalu (8,481 m), Cho Oyo (8,188 m), Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), and Annapurna (8,091 m).

Small Ranges

Himalayas are also abode to several short peaks such as the Pir Panjal Range (4,100 m),  Dhauladar Range (3,500-4,800 m), Zanskar Range (5,500 m) and the Aravali (1,722 m). The short peaks are perfect for trekking, adventure sports, scenic views and natural beauty.

Other famous Ranges of Himalayas

Other Famous ranges loved by trekkers include Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), Broad Peak (8,951 m), Gasherbrum I (8,080 m), Shishapangma (8,027 m), Nanda Devi (7,816 m) and Gasherbrum II (8,035 m)
