History of Chakrata

Chakrata has an interesting history, it goes back to the Colonial times. In 1866, the British Indian Army established this cantonment town. It came to be known as Chakrata after the tribe which lived there. The place played a significant role in army campaigns and was a crucial military base during British rule. The location of Chakrata is such that is an ideal place for the army to place troops. After our country gained Independence, Chakrata was taken over by the Indian Army, and the gates to the town were closed to civilians until the early 1990s.

Chakrata weather is mild temperature, not too harsh. It is pleasant throughout the year. The summer temperatures  (March-June) range from 25 degrees to 12 degrees. The rainy season is from July to September which should be avoided as this area receives high rainfall. The winter starts in late October and up in February.
