According to locals, the serpent king, King Bhagsu once stole water from the sacred lake Nag Dal. Lord Shiva became angry at his act and fought a battle with him. Realising his mistake, King Bhagsu repented and sought apology from Lord Shiva; Lord Shiva forgave him. The place where this battle happened is now known as Bhagsunag Temple which is popular among trekkers.
The Triund region is considered very sacred. It is believed that many yogis and sadhus meditated here in the caves scattered along the trail.Even today, you can find ascetics meditating here, especially near Laka Got and Lahesh Caves.
Triund region was part of Kangra Kingdom during the medieval period. It witnessed multiple invasions by foreign invaders like Ghaznavids and Mughals. But due to the remoteness of terrain, they didn't settle here.
This region gained attention when Dalai Lama took refuge in McLeod Ganj in 1960. The region including Triund attracted global media and tourists as well. Since then, the Triund region has become a very popular spiritual and tourism circuit. Due to its beginners-friendly trek, it's the top choice in Himachal among trekkers.
