Jim Corbett is India’s first national park in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. It was named Hailey National Park when it was established in 1936. It was renamed Jim Corbett National Park in 1956 after Jim Corbett a naturalist and hunter who played an important role in the park’s establishment and its development.
It is located in the sub-Himalayan belt along Doon Valley between the Lesser Himalayas and the Siwalik Hills. It covers an area of more than 1200 sq km which has more than 500 sq km of core zone and the rest is the buffer zone. It is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopards, Asiatic elephants, deer and many more endangered animals and migratory birds. The national park is divided into six different tourist zones with Bijrani zone being the most popular one.
The best time to visit Jim Corbett National Park is in Winters from November to February where the days are pleasant and nights are cold. The maximum temperatures range from 5–30-degree C. The sightings of wild animals are more during daytime and tourists can also get a chance to see all the migratory birds in the region during winters.
The summer months from March to June also get tourists due to school holidays in India. The temperatures can rise as high as 45 degree C but the open safaris esp in the early mornings make the sightings possible.
From June to September Corbett receives very heavy rainfall due to which park is partially shut owing to the jungle being muddy and slippery. However, some buffer zones are open with fewer number of safari options open for tourists.
Jim Corbett is located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand state at a distance of 64 km from the beautiful hill station of Nainital and 246 km from New Delhi.
BY AIR: Pantnagar airport is the nearest airport to Jim Corbett situated at a distance of 86 kms. It’s a small domestic airport with limited connectivity. Most of its flight are via Delhi.
BY RAIL: The nearest railway station to Corbett is Ramnagar Railway station about 12 kilometres from park’s entrance. This railway station has good connectivity of trains from Indias major railway stations like Delhi, Lucknow, etc.
BY ROAD: Jim Corbett is well connected by motorable roads with all major cities of Uttarakhand and nearby states.
One can easily take their own cars or even get busses and shared or private taxis to reach Ramnagar which is the closest town to Corbett just 2kms from parks entrance.

2. ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS: A government id proof such as Aadhar card, passport or driving license is required at all hotels or guest houses while you check in. Additionally, some permits might be required while visiting some national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. Without a valid permit entry inside a tiger reserve is not allowed and it has to be done before hand only.
3. MEDICINES: If you are on any lifelong medicines definitely carry those. Along with it one can carry a few basic medicines for fever and pain relief and some basic first aid stuff like band aids, antiseptics and ointments. Inside the park one can carry a mosquito repellents or ointments too.
4. MISCELLANEOUS: other items like sunglasses, caps, umbrella, raincoats, sturdy backpack to keep some hiking gears and sunscreen can be carried too.
Q1: How HOW MANY DAYS ARE ENOUGH IN CORBETT?
Ans: A 3–4-day trip is required to do a minimum of one safari per day to get a glimpse of the mighty tigers. But if you are short of time a minimum of 1-2 day is also sufficient and hopefully will be lucky to spot tigers.
Q2: HOW MUCH TIME DOES A SAFARI TAKE & HOW MANY SAFARIS ARE THERE IN A DAY?
Ans: There are two slots for safaris early morning and afternoon safari and each safari is for 3 hrs duration.
Q3: WHICH SAFARI ZONE TO BOOK AT CORBETT?
Ans. BIJRANI & DHIKALA zone are the most sought-after zones. Dhikala zone also offers night stay inside the forest rest house.
Q4: IS ONLY JEEP SAFARI AN OPTION AT CORBETT?
Ans: No, apart from Jeep safari one can also experience elephant and canter safari.
