Dehradun is the winter capital of Uttarakhand (summer capital being Bhararisen) is located in the Doon Valley at the foothills of Himalayas. It is nestled between Song River, a tributary of Ganga and Asan River, a tributary of Yamuna thus providing a picturesque location for tourists.

The town of Dehradun was established in 17th century by Ram Rai son of the seventh Sikh Guru who built a gurudwara there in those times.

According to the legends in Mahabharat, teacher or guru for Kauravas and Pandavas Dronacharya was born and raised in Dehradun the commonly known as Doon Valley.

In Ramayana it also mentions that after their battle with Ravan, Lord Ram and Lakhshman visited and stayed at Dehradun.

BEST TIME TO VISIT DEHRADUN

The best time to visit Dehradun is from February to June where the temperatures are very comfortable ranging between 10 – 35 degrees Celsius as a result of which it becomes a favourite spot for the tourists.

Dehradun in winters is from November to February where the temperature can fall as low as 0 to 3 degree C, though snowfall is occasional only. Since its an off season it provides a rather relaxed trip for visitors who can enjoy the natural beauty of the region with less crowd.

June to September is where one receives moderate to high rainfall often prone to floods which causes disruption in outdoor and other adventure activities.

PLACES TO VISIT IN DEHRADUN

TAPKESHWAR MAHADEV TEMPLE – a 6000-yr old shiv temple which has a natural shivling inside it. It is situated on top of a natural cave known as Drona caves which is the place where Dronacharya lived.  According to the legend it is believed that Dronacharya's wife Kalyani was unable to breastfeed their newborn son and Dronacharya was unable to afford a cow or its milk so he prayed to Shiva and as a blessing milk started dripping from the shivling. Apart from its mythological significance the surrounding Sulphur water springs make it a famous tourist destination too. 

ROBBER’S CAVE - 8 kms from Dehradun is Robbers cave which is alos known as Gucchu Pani.  There are two rock formations and a river flows between them in the middle of the cave. During the British rule this cave became a hideout to robbers. It is also believed to be the home for Lord Shiva. In summers the underground water provides a cool environment for picnickers.

SASHTRADHARA – located 14 km from the city centre is situated near Robbers cave is a popular tourist attraction due to the natural hot water sulphur springs known for its therapeutic properties. 

MINDROLLING MONASTERY – also known as Buddhist temple complex is one of the largest monasteries in India. It is especially known for its brilliant architecture and beautiful gardens. It houses Asia’s tallest stupa.

DEHRADUN ZOO – also known as Malsi Deer Park is home to many animals mainly 2 horned deer, Neelgai, tigers, peacocks and more. It offers families a perfect tourist spot.

CLOCK TOWER – also known as Ghanta ghar was made by the British when they ruled India. Though it doesn’t work now when it used to it is said that when it rang the sound could be heard till the other end. PALTAN BAZZAR a popular market place starts from clock tower till the railway station and good for shopping artifacts and souvenirs. 

DAAT KALI TEMPLE – situated 11km from the city centre this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The flame at the temple is burning continuously since 1921. Locals visit this temple which is situated along a major highway when they begin or buy new things to mark for an auspicious start.

FUN VALLEY AMUSEMENT PARK – located 24 kms from city centre Fun Valley Park is the largest amusement park in North India which boasts a water park, go carting area and shopping complex making it ideal for families to make a day trip out of it.

HOW TO REACH DEHRADUN 

As Dehradun is a major tourist destination it is very well connected with major Indian cities like Delhi which is 250 kms away and around 170 kms from Chandigarh. 

  • BY AIR – Dehradun has an airport called Jolly Grant Airport which is approximately 20 kms from the city centre and the nearest International Airport is New Delhi International Airport which is approximately 270 kms away.
  • BY RAIL – Dehradun is well connected by trains from all over India with frequent trains from all major Indian cities. The Dehradun railway station is approximately 2kms or about 10 – 15 mins from city centre.
  • BY ROAD – Dehradun is well connected by roads to various Indian cities like Delhi, Chandigarh etc with frequent private and shared taxi and bus services. It also acts a major connecting point with other important tourist places like Rishikesh and Mussoorie.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO CARRY –

CLOTHING – Travelling during winters one will require to be dressed in warm yet comfortable clothing. Layering your clothes hence becomes important and practical.

Wearing thermal tops and bottoms is a must esp. when travelling during winter months along with some woolen or thermal socks. Over the thermals one can wear layers of other clothing items to keep warm.

A woolen cap or a beanie will keep one warm especially when winds are strong.

A waterproof jacket, gloves and shoes are very important while undertaking outdoor activities like skiing, trekking etc.

If travelling in summer season than a simple yet comfortable jacket will be sufficient.

Important thing to note is that shorts, miniskirts, night suits and torn jeans aren’t allowed inside some temple hence it would be better if they are avoided.

ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS – a government id proof such as Aadhar card, passport or driving license is required at all hotels or guest houses while you check in. Additionally, some permits might be required while visiting some national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

MEDICINES – if you are on any lifelong medicines definitely carry those. Along with it one can carry a few basic medicines for fever and pain relief and some basic first aid stuff like band aids, antiseptics and ointments.

MISCELLANEOUS – other items like umbrella, raincoats, sturdy backpack to keep some raincoats etc and sunscreen can be carried too.

A – By itself a minimum of 2-3 days is required to enjoy the sights in Dehradun.  But for a more wholesome travel experience one can combine it with Rishikesh, Dhanaulti or Mussoorie.
