Spituk Trek Overview

The Spituk Trek is a popular trekking route in Ladakh, India. It is a relatively short trek that can be completed in a day, making it accessible to a wide range of trekkers, including beginners. The trek typically begins from Spituk Village, which is located about 8 kilometers from the main town of Leh. One of the main highlights of this trek is the stunning view of Stok Kangri, which is one of the highest peaks in the Stok Range. Trekkers get to experience the dramatic landscapes of Ladakh, including barren mountains, rugged terrain, and beautiful vistas.

Spituk trek is a short but beautiful and historical trek located in Ladakh Valley. Starting from Leh, it passes through Spituk Village, Rumbak Valley and reaches Stok La Pass spanning 4-5 days. Spituk is a Ladakhi word which means 'excellent'. The name has been taken from the famous Spituk Monastery which was established in 11th century by eminent Buddhist Guru Od-de who was the disciple of Rinchen Zangpo.

The trek begins from Spituk where you walk along the banks of the Indus River and reach Zingchen. The path also passes through Hemis National Park where you can spot amazing Himalayan wildlife like blue sheep, fox and snow leopard (very rare).

The trek continues to Rumbak Village and Yurutse and finally reaches Stok La Pass (4800 m). From there you can take a 360-degree view of Ladakh Range and Stok Kangri.

Spituk trek is perfect for the people who want to experience culture, history and Himalayan phenomena together. It connects you with the soul of Ladakh throughout the journey.

Spituk Festival

Spituk Festival is a traditional and religious celebration held at Spituk Monastery in Ladakh every year in the month of January. It continues for 3 days. During the festival, Lama and monks perform special rituals and prayers. Cham Dance is the main attraction of this festival where monks perform a symbolic dance wearing colourful traditional dresses and masks on face. It exhibits the victory of good over evil.

The Spituk Festival is also associated with Goddess Kali. The statue of Gonpo or Mahakala is unveiled in this festival for public viewing. Gonpo or Mahakala is a ferocious guardian deity who is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Kali. Locals and tourists gather in large numbers to witness this divine moment and celebrate the festival. Spituk Festival is not just a religious event; it demonstrates rich Ladakhi cultural heritage and communal harmony
