The Neergarh Waterfall Trek is also one of the most popularly known short treks (one of the most scenic) around Rishikesh (Uttarakhand). This trek takes you through the Badrinath Highway and culminates in a multi-level waterfall hidden deep within lush forests, located in the lower Garhwal Himalayas.
This trek is an easy choice for anyone who is new to trekking, families and kids, or individuals wishing to enjoy a forest trail, waterfall experience, and/or trekking without having to go to higher altitudes.
The trailhead of Neergarh waterfall is located on the banks of a babbling brook, and the trek winds through beautiful Sal forests, up stone staircase paths, passes by little streams and natural pools. You'll enjoy the sound of water running, birds chirping, and the peaceful silence of the forest; there's no better way to escape the noise of the busy ghats of Rishikesh than by taking this short trek to Neergarh Waterfall. You can easily make a half-day trip of it if you are a person travelling with limited time.
The local Garhwali village has always had ties to the Neergarh area and its traditional use of the forests over the years; for example, the name 'Neer' originates from the Hindi language (meaning 'water'), indicating that many natural springs and water-fed streams exist there. Historically, the paths that run through these areas of forest have always been used by locals for accessing water sources, obtaining firewood, and grazing livestock.
Similar to other places in the Rishikesh area with forested landscapes, Neergarh has also attracted many sages and sadhus (Hindu monks) throughout history who preferred their practice near the water bodies. Thus, many caves and shaded areas of the forest made great locations for meditating or performing other spiritual practices solely due to the peacefulness of the environment.
As time passed, many people began to recognise the beauty of this series of waterfalls that cascade down the mountain, leading to an increase in the number of tourists and trekkers in the area. Even though the waterfall has become so popular today, the walk toward this site still has many areas that will provide a sense of natural beauty, especially as the waterfall cascades several times before you reach its final destination.
Neergarh Waterfall is noteworthy for being a multi-tiered waterfall, allowing people to choose to visit only the first block of water or to continue up to the higher blocks where the water is cleaner, and there are fewer other people.
The route from the parking lot to Neergarh Waterfall is through a very thick forest of Sal trees with covered walkways, stone steps, and some viewpoints. The trees and ground vegetation will be at their brightest and most alive during the monsoon and after.
At the very top of Neergarh Waterfall, the water forms small natural pools that can be used for relaxation and photography (without actually going into the water).
The Neergarh trek is a short, straight, and beginner-friendly trek. This makes it a great option for a first-time trekker or for a family to do together.
Neergarh Waterfall Trekking is generally an easy trek. However, there are moderately challenging sections, particularly concerning the ascent to the top of the upper waterfalls, which involves walking on stone steps continuously.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow since there are steps and handrails along many parts of the trail.
You don't require any mountaineering or technical trekking skills. Just perform basic fitness; be cautious on the slippery surface!
The best time to visit Neergarh Waterfall is during March–June, when you experience good weather along with a moderate flow of water in the waterfall. This is the most comfortable time for families to undertake the trek.
Although the monsoon season is usually regarded as the best time to see the waterfall in full flow, the forest will be lush green, and due to a large amount of rain, there will probably be some slipperiness along the trail.
The best time to go trekking at this time of year is from October to November. Post-monsoon generally will have clearer skies, fewer crowds and a safe trail. The water will be clean and scenic at this time, too.
The winter months are relatively quiet; however, there will be considerably less water compared to the wet season. Nonetheless, trekking is an excellent option for those who enjoy nature walks.
