Matho La Trek Overview

Maths La trek is one of Ladakh's lesser known treks which offers incredibly beautiful trails connecting the famous Indus Valley to the Stock and Markha Valleys. The trek starts from Matho village, located a short distance from Leh and blends Himalayan wilderness and Ladakhi culture together. Matho is a beautiful village in Ladakh with a rich history, located approximately 22 km southeast of Leh, situated along the bank of the Indus River. Lies at the foot of the Zanskar Mountain Range. The village is popular for its Matho Monastery, which is the only Monastery in Ladakh that is a Sakya Sect monastery in Ladakh as well as its unique annual festival celebration known as Matho Nagrang, also called the Oracle festival, and it is famous for the predictions made by two oracles, called Rongtsans

As the trail begins, you first encounter barren landscapes of Ladakh with mesmerizing colours of brown, ochre and gold merging in blue skies. Then after you cross the Matho La Pass (around 4,900 m) – this is the high point where you are greeted with panoramic views of Stok Kangri range and snow-clad peaks of the Trans-Himalayas. The place feels isolated but peaceful and enables you to hear your inner voice.

Unlike other commercial treks, Matho La is a quiet and uncrowded trek which provides a true sense of exploration. Matho village itself is a spiritual place known for its ancient monastery. The best time to undertake this journey from June to September, often takes 5-6 days to complete.
