The Kipling Trail is a fantastic day hike situated just outside of Dehradun in India. The trail connects the Doon Valley to the nearby hills of Mussoorie. This traditional forest trail begins at the Shahanshahi Ashram and gradually climbs through thick sal, pine, and oak forest until it reaches Mossy Falls.
While most high-altitude treks in the Himalayas involve multi-day hikes at very high elevations, the Kipling Trail is considered to be a low-elevation, half-day to a day hike that can be hiked by beginner hiker groups such as families with children or those who enjoy nature or participate in gradual countryside walking. While hiking on the Kipling Trail, visitors are rewarded with tranquillity, shaded areas, birdlife, and spectacular views of the valleys, which makes it an excellent alternative to the extremely busy areas of cities like Dehradun and Mussoorie.
The trail is generally referred to as the Kipling Trail because it is believed that Rudyard Kipling, the author of the well-known book The Jungle Book, walked on this trail while living in the area. The Kipling Trail served as an ancient walking route used by forest officers to travel between the towns of Dehradun and Mussoorie during the time before roadways were built.
Historically, the Kipling Trail has also served as a village-to-village connector, allowing people to move between villages, as well as access sources of water and resources from the forest. The Kipling Trail maintains its original charm and characteristics, as it is not commonly commercialised yet. This makes the Kipling Trail one of the most authentic forest hikes in the region of Dehradun.
The trek passes through thick sal forests, chir pine groves, and thick wooded shade areas, creating a very pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere throughout the year, even in warm months when hiking.
The hike has a rich historical feel because it includes a path once walked by the British officers.
The trek normally ends at Mossy Falls, a beautiful seasonal waterfall which is very quiet and surrounded by trees—ideal for resting, picnicking and taking pictures.
Compared to busy Mussoorie trails and viewpoints, Kipling Trail remains relatively less crowded, especially on weekdays.
With no camping and/or technical areas and numerous alternate exit points, this hike is perfect for a day out and a day hike.
