Difficulty Level Of Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek

Dharamshala Nayagaon is a moderate to difficult trek. This trek does not require special gear or have very difficult terrain. But the trekkers have to trek for long hours. When the weather conditions are good, trekkers complete the trek without any difficulty. However, during monsoon, the trail can be very risky.

Trekkers have to be physically and mentally prepared for long hours. They will cover about 12-18 km every day. Trekking over 10 km every day is not easy. The walking hours increase and the trekkers get very little time to rest.

Trail conditions

Dharamshala Nayagaon trek is not a very high-altitude trek but still, the trek can be very difficult. Some terrains can be muddy and rocky. In monsoon, the trek becomes very muddy. Walking on muddy trails becomes risky.

Physical fitness

Trekkers should be physically fit for the Dharamshala Nayagaon trek. You will walk for 8-10 hours daily. Build your stamina and then plan your trek. You can start jogging and light trekking a couple of weeks before the trek.

  • Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek from March To April

This is the Rhododendron blooming season. Your days will be warm and night will be chilly. The trek will be covered with red Rhodo flowers and the snow will start melting in the higher regions.

  • Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek from May To June

This is the summertime and good for long trekking hours. Sometimes, it might get hot in the daytime. The visibility of the Dhauladhar range will be great.

  • Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek from July To September

Avoid trekking during the monsoon. The trails will be very muddy and slippery. Landslides are very common in these months. You can also get leeches and insects on the trail.

  • Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek from October To November

How To Reach Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek

Dharamshala is a famous hill station of Himachal Pradesh that is easily accessible from many cities. You can reach Dharamshala by road or by air. There is no railway connection to Dharamshala; the nearest railway station is Pathankot.

  • Route 1: Delhi To Dharamshala

Limited flights are available to Dharamshala. You can book a flight to Delhi and take an overnight bus to Dharamshala. It will take about 10-12 hours. Both HRTC and private bus services are available.

  • Route 2: Chandigarh To Dharamshala

Chandigarh is well connected via train, bus, and air. Reach Chandigarh and look for buses to Dharamshala. The distance is about 250 km and will take about 6-7 hours. Shared taxi services are also available from Chandigarh to Dharamshala.

  • Route 3: Pathankot To Dharamshala

Pathankot has great railway connectivity from all major cities. Book a train ticket and reach Pathankot. Now you can take a bus or local taxi to Dharamshala. The distance is only 90 km and will take about 2-3 hours.

Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek Short Itinerary

Day 1: Reach Dharamshala and have a rest

Day 2: Sightseeing of the Monastery, Bhagsu Shiva Temple, and other local attractions.

Day 3: Drive from Dharamshala to Billing. The distance is 80 km and will take 2-3 hours.

Day 4: Start your trek from Billing to Palachak. The trek distance is 12 km and will take 5-6 hours.

Day 5: Start the trek from Palachak to Panihardu. 

Day 6: Start your trek from Panihardu to Marhu. The trek distance is 17 km and will take about 10 hours.

Day 7: Trek from Marhu to Bara Bhangal. You have to cover 18 km in about 10 hours.

Day 8: Trek from Dhardi to Nayagaon. Trek distance is 14 km and will take 6-7 hours.

Day 9: Trek from Nayagaon to Deol. Trek distance is 8 km and will take 3-4 hours. Now drive from Deol to Chamba. The distance is 75 km and will take 2-3 hours.

Dharamshala Nayagaon Trek Itinerary

Altitude: 1457 m

Accommodation: Hotel or guesthouse

Meals: Dinner

You arrive in Dharamshala today. Pine forests surround the town. You can see the snow-capped mountains.

Take it easy to recover from your trip. Check your gear for the days ahead. Get used to the fresh mountain air. You can walk around your hotel or guesthouse. Try some of the local food.

Go to bed early. You need to be fresh to start the trek tomorrow.

Trek Distance and Duration: No trekking

Altitude: Around 1457 m

Accommodation: Hotel or guesthouse

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

You will visit the famous Dalai Lama Monastery. It is a peaceful spot. Buddhist prayer flags flutter in the wind there.

The Bhagsu Nag Temple is nearby. So is the Bhagsu waterfall. Walk the winding streets of McLeod Ganj. You will see shops, cafรฉs, and local art. Small temples and walking paths keep the atmosphere calm. This day is relaxed, but you will see a lot of culture and nature.

Trek Distance and Duration: 80 km; 2-3 hours drive

Altitude: Dharamshala 1457 m to Billing 1970 m

Accommodation: Guesthouse or campsite

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

The drive covers about 80 kilometers and takes two to three hours. The road twists through forested hills and small villages. Billing is known as a paragliding spot but also serves as the start of treks into the Dhauladhar mountains. Plan your gear check and prepare for the trek beginning tomorrow.

Trek Distance and Duration: 12 km; 5-6 hours

Altitude: 1970 m to 2750 m

Accommodation: Camping

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

You start walking on forest trails. You pass through pine and rhododendron trees. The path climbs slowly. You walk through shaded spots and open grassy areas.

Now you can see the valley below. You can also see the snow peaks far away. Palachak is a small camp spot. It has grass near some streams. The mountains get quiet in the evening.

Trek Distance and Duration: 12-15 km; 6-8 hours

Altitude: 2750 m to 3110 m

Accommodation: Camping

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

You start walking on forest trails. You pass through pine and rhododendron trees. The path climbs slowly. You walk through shaded spots and open grassy areas.

Now you can see the valley below. You can also see the snow peaks far away. Palachak is a small camp spot. It has grass near some streams. The mountains get quiet in the evening.

Altitude: 3110 m to 3200 m

Todayโ€™s trek is one of the longer and harder days. Follow rugged trails through mixed forest and open highlands. The path may get steep but offers wide mountain views. Marhu is a small village where camping or guesthouses await. Rest well after a long day.

Trek Distance and Duration: 18 km; 10 hours

Altitude: 3200 m to 2540 m

Accommodation: Camping or guesthouse

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

Today is another long trek. You cross mountain meadows, forests, and rocky ridges. The height changes slowly the whole time.

Bara Bhangal is a remote village. It is known for its traditional culture and nice surroundings. After your walk, enjoy the village atmosphere. It is very peaceful.

Trek Distance and Duration: 14 km; 6-7 hours

Altitude: Approx. 2540 m to 2400 m

Accommodation: Camping or homestay

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Evening Snacks + Dinner

The trail goes through pine forests. It runs along river valleys. You will cross small bridges. You will also pass local farms.

Nayagaon is a quiet place. You can find camping here and simple homestays. In the evening, you will hear the soft sounds of mountain life.

Trek Distance and Duration: 8 km; 3-4 hours

Drive Distance and Duration: 75 km; 2-3 hours

Altitude: 2400 m to Deol (2100 m), Chamba (1000 m approx.)

Accommodation: Hotel or guesthouse in Chamba

The last day of the trek is easier. It is a slow walk downhill. You will arrive in Deol village. Prepare for the drive from there.

The road to Chamba goes through forests and valleys. Chamba has old temples and a busy market. This is a good place to rest. You can celebrate the end of your trek here.

  • Accommodation – At Base Camp, stay at a local homestay or guest house for one night each, which will give you an insight into the authentic lifestyle of the locals.( INR 5000 per person extra for single sharing throughout the trek )
    On Trek stay in a 2-person Vango Halo Pro/A-Shape tent, which is to be shared by two trekkers, built to withstand extreme weather conditions and at the same time making you comfortable after a hard day’s trek.
  • Camping Equipment – specially designed sleeping bags that can withstand harsh weather conditions, foam mattresses. Other safety gear like microspikes, gaiters, an ice axe, and helmets will be provided.
  • Medical Kit – our team will be equipped with an extensive medical kit, which our team is trained and experienced to use. Oxygen cylinders are used after they are thoroughly inspected throughout the Trek. Even campsites have large oxygen cylinders as backups.
  • Permission  -  Forest entry charges for Indian nationals (Additional charges will be applicable for international tourists)
  • Meals – Breakfast, packed lunch (on trek days), evening snacks, and dinner will be served. A hearty, delicious, and nutrition-filled Veg meals with egg preparation will be provided throughout the trek. (Jain and Vegan Food can also be arranged on prior notification.)There will be a dedicated Kitchen Tent along with a dining tent, which will have a dining table too.
  • Our Team – A highly experienced and AMC-certified Trek Leader who will help ensure that the entire trek goes smoothly and safely while navigating the challenging conditions during the trek, and is skilled enough to navigate any medical emergency that can arise during the trek. Local and route Guides who are well-versed with the region and provide an in-depth insight into the local customs and knowledge of the flora and fauna endemic to the region. A dedicated Kitchen staff, which includes a Cook, a helper, and other support staff. There will also be porters and mules to carry common equipment.
  • Cloakroom - We have a cloakroom facility available for extra luggage. Every trekker is permitted to leave their luggage behind at no charge.

Trek Exclusions

  • Personal expenses like tips, personal medicines, phone calls etc.
  • Travel Expenses -  Travel expenses from your hometown to the mentioned Pick-Up Point are not included in the trek fee.
    From the scheduled pick-up spot to the base camp, we have our own fleet of vehicles like Bolero, Innova, Dezire, or Tempo Traveler (12-seater). This is be shared by trekkers for a pre-decided amount. All vehicles are non-AC.
  • Personal Equipment - Any personal gear like jackets, shoes, cutlery, or backpacks are not included in the trek fee. We recommend renting them from our Rental Store for an affordable fee. This can be pre-arranged to avoid last-minute hang-ups. 
  • Offloading - We encourage carrying your backpack to get into the true spirit of trekking. However, if needed, you can opt to offload your personal luggage of up to 12 kgs for an additional cost of INR 500 per bag per day.
  • Trek Insurance - A mandatory trek insurance fee is charged in addition to your trek fee. Since most medical insurance doesn’t cover adventure activities, trek insurance offers essential coverage, enhancing your safety without a significant financial burden.
  • Buffer day on the trek - We have kept a buffer day on the trek to account for any weather-related delay. If this is utilized, you will need to pay an extra amount to your trek leader. 
  • Anything apart from inclusions
  • Please carry a lunch box for a packed lunch/breakfast to avoid using polythene and Aluminium foil.
