The Dalai Lama Trek is named after His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama who has resided in Dharamshala since 1960 after leaving Tibet. This small hill town grew gradually to be a hub of Tibetan culture and Buddhism when he took his residence in McLeod Ganj. The one that we know as the Dalai Lama Trek was originally a mountain trail that was used by the people in their villages to travel around and connect the villages and the forests.
During the course of time, when the numbers of visitors to the Dharamshala increased, to discover Tibetan culture and visit their monasteries, this quiet way turned out to be a favorite among visitors and trekkers.
Most individuals travel this trail because of the mountain scenery as well as a sense of the relaxing nature of the area that is associated with the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community. This route is an easy and significant hike that was organized by local guides and trekking groups to boost tourism. The Dalai Lama Trek is less about adventure challenges and more about a more relaxed atmosphere with its influence of Buddhism and its basic mountain beauty.

The road however may be slippery after rainfall hence good shoes are essential. In general, the path is quite easy and straightforward.
The height is not so high in comparison with big Himalayan treks, and therefore most of the people do not experience any serious breathing issues. You may be a bit exhausted as you climb the hill, but breaks are normally satisfactory. A slow walk and consumption of water helps. The altitude sickness is not very common on this trek.
The distance of walking is also not that high, it does not exceed several hours per day and depends on your speed of walking. You can make the journey in a leisurely way. The fact that the trail is not long like some other treks does not exhaust your body very much.
The Dalai Lama Trek is very beautiful in the spring. These months mark when flowers begin to bloom, trees begin to turn green and the weather is pleasant enough to go walking. The sky is mostly clear and therefore beautiful scenes of the Dhauladhar mountains are seen without a lot of fog. Days are warm and not hot and nights are cool and not freezing. It is the season that is favourable to beginners and photographers since nature is vibrant and the trail is quite refreshing.
The trek is also a good activity during summer, particularly to individuals who wish to get rid of the heat in the city. Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj have temperatures considerably lower than the plains and trekking in the daytime is fun. Nevertheless, light rains may occur sometimes in late June and early July when the monsoon is beginning to approach and it may cause the trail to become a little bit slippery.
Autumn is believed to be the most favorable period of Dalai Lama Trek since the weather is very stable and clear after the monsoon. It is a cool and airy climate and long walks are very comfortable. The golden and green colors balanced in the natural scenery also make the scenery beautiful and present ideal photo opportunities.
It can be trekked during winter but a little bit difficult because of cold weather. In high places it may get a small amount of light snow especially in the early morning and in the night, and the temperature is very low, particularly during the early morning hours. Winter may be magic, when you like a cold and calm environment, but you should remember to take warm clothes and prepare against cold winds.
Comfortable and basic trekking gear should also be carried when you are heading to Dalai Lama Trek. Good trekking shoes of good quality and strong gripping are required. Always carry warm garments such as a jacket or fleece. A rain jacket or poncho is also convenient as the rain is a frequent occurrence in the hills.
Also do not forget a cap, sun glasses, and sun screen to ensure you are not subjected to intense sunlight at high altitudes. All you need is a backpack that can hold your things, and this should not be heavy on your shoulders hence making it easy and comfortable to walk.
Besides clothes, you need to bring personal and safety equipment with you so that your journey becomes comfortable. To ensure that they are always refreshed, they should always carry a water bottle and some sources of energy such as dry fruits, chocolates or energy bars that they can use to get a quick boost of power as they walk. The simple first aid kit consisting of band-aids, pain reliever spray, and personal medicine is highly essential.
The Dalai Lama Trek has one of the most favourable activities that is just to pause and have a glance at the mountain views. The trail will have the beautiful Dhauladhar peaks, green valleys and broad open skies. It is even better to take short breaks to look around and take fresh air and make the journey special. Moments of the sunrise and sunset are the calmest moments and ideal ones to relax in calm.
As the trek is near Tibetan settlements, small monasteries and temples can be visited as well on the way or close to the trek. They are serene and spiritual spots where one can sit down and watch the local culture. You may find prayer wheels, color flags and monks chanting. It offers another and significant experience other than walking in nature.
The hike is excellent when it comes to photography. It is possible to shoot forests, mountain ranges, houses in the area, prayer flags, and beautiful clouds floating on the mountains. You do not have to be a professional photographer, but a mere set of mobile photos looks unbelievable here. The walk will also be more entertaining and calm, as it is possible to watch birds, trees, and little streams.
Dalai Lama Trek is an adventure as well as a peace trek. There are a lot of individuals who prefer to sit and relax in the forest or on a view point. Cool wind, sounds of birds and silence of mountains turn the place into a model of meditation or deep breathing. It cleanses the mind and the hike is revitalizing both physically and mind wise.
You should try to start your walk early in the morning to get the time to walk slowly. Mornings in the mountains are generally clear and pleasant and the mountain views are also better. You also have more time to take breaks, take photos and rest. When you are late, then there may be a pressure to complete before the sun goes down and that would have made the journey stressful. An early start is a safer and more relaxed experience.
Strong trekking shoes of good grip are essential as some of the trail may be rocky, or on the other hand may be slippery, particularly after rain. Flat slippers or casual shoes should be avoided because they may lead to slipping or pains in the foot. Wear light clothes rather than a single heavy jacket whereby you can add or remove clothing depending on change of weather.
The Dalai Lama Trek is also said to be safe but it is always good to have a friend, group of people, or a guide with you particularly when you are new. Hiking with somebody provides some form of support in the event of fatigue, loss of direction, or light injuries. When you go alone you should come and tell somebody that you are going out and what time you will be back. Being in touch and vigilant enhances security and provides a sense of security in the process.
