Mount Yunam Expedition Overview
Mount Yunam or Yunam Peak is a high-altitude expedition trek (6,111 m) located in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh. Though it's a high-altitude trek, it's relatively an easy expedition due to its non technical climbing. The success rate of climbing Yunam Peak is mostly high, this is the reason for its popularity among mountaineers and trekkers.
The Mount Yunam expedition trek usually starts from the small village of Bharatpur near the Baralacha La Pass. Baralacha La Pass lies on the Leh-Manali highway in a dry, cold and windy region of Himalaya. The trek offers the breathtaking views of snow-clad peaks, barren valleys and high-altitude mountain passes.
The total duration of the Mount Yunam expedition trek is around 7 days. The trails pass through rocky terrain, scree slopes, glacial sections especially near the summit. While the trek is not technically challenging, the high altitude summit push makes it physically testing. The climbing demands proper acclimatization, physical stamina, mental strength and willingness to reach the top.
Bharatpur is the basecamp chosen by most trekkers. Trekkers usually start summit push at midnight to reach the top at sunrise. Summit push can be longer and tiring but absolutely rewarding at the end. From the top, you get to see a 360-degree view of the mountains of Ladakh and Spiti.
Mount Yunam expedition trek is ideal for seasoned trekkers or fit beginners. It also serves as a great training for higher expeditions. The best time to do it is between July and September. The entire experience of Mount Yunam expedition is full of adventure and Himalayan core scenic beauty.
Day 1: Arrive in Manali (around 2 050 m); gather gear, orientation and overnight stay.
Day 2: Drive from Manali → Jispa/Keylong (3 200 m) via Atal Tunnel; acclimatization walk included.
Day 3: Continue drive to Bharatpur (4 700 m), passing Deepak & Suraj Tal. Light trek to camp.
Day 4: Acclimatization at Bharatpur with a short hike to 5 200 m.
Day 5: Trek to Summit Camp (5 300 m) near a glacial lake.
Day 6: Summit push: start at 2 am, reach 6 100 m, and return to Bharatpur (4 700 m). Long 12-hr day.
Day 7: Trek down to Bharatpur → drive back to Manali (200 km; 7–9 hr).
Day 8: Buffer day for weather or extra acclimatization (optional). Departure after 7 pm.

Mount Yunam region is considered deeply spiritual. Though there are limited or almost no historical records are available regarding Mount Yunam, the Lahul and Spiti regions are considered revered in Hinduism and Buddhism. As per pre-Buddhist belief systems, the high mountains are believed the abodes of deities who are the protectors of the land. The region is considered ideal for meditation and spiritual introspection. In Hinduism, the high peaks of Himalayas are considered the abodes of Lord Shiva.
During ancient times, the high-altitude deserts of the Lahul and Spiti regions have been part of the Indo-Tibetan trade. Later in the medieval period, the region around the Yunam Peak came under the influence of Lahul and Spiti Valley monarchies and was ruled by the local chieftains. The famous Baralacha La Pass was famous among the trade caravans. Due to harsh terrain, the Mount Yunam region remained protected from major invasions but it never lost its significance among traders.
In recent decades, when mountaineering became popular, many expeditions began. Yunam Peak also became popular for its relatively easy and non-technical climbing. Mountaineers who prepare for high-altitude summits like Stok Kangri or Mentok Kangri, Yunam Peak serves as a training spot. Mount Yunam is now managed under local administration and attracts many trekkers and climbers across the globe.

Mount Yunam stands tall at an altitude of 6,111 m (20,050 ft). Regardless of its high-altitude it is considered one of the easiest 6000-meter expeditions in the Indian Himalayas, but easiest doesn't mean for kids, families and unfit beginners. Due to its high altitude, uneven terrain and unpredictable weather, the climb to it is still challenging.
The trail of Mount Yunam is cold, dry, rocky and consists of glacial lands, specifically near the summit. The terrain is barren and remote and requires proper navigation.
The expedition starts from Bharatpur (near Baralacha La Pass) and climbing to basecamp takes around 3-4 hrs. From basecamp summit takes 8 to 10 hrs which feels long and exhausting. Most trekkers start the summit at midnight to reach at the time of sunrise.
Though the climbing to Mount Yunam is not technically difficult, some technical support is required especially during the harsh weather conditions like snowfall. A proper team and professional guides are essential for safety and emergency situations. Trek duration is about one week (6-7 days) including acclimatization days.
The weather during the summit can be unpredictable, climbers must be updated on weather conditions. Temperature can drop to -10°C or even below at night. Proper clothing and other essentials are must to carry. Trekkers can be prone to AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) so proper acclimatization is crucial.
Overall, for experienced trekkers or climbers, it's not a difficult expedition. The success rate of climbing the summit is mostly high. If beginners (with physical fitness) are attempting it, they must follow the trekking guidelines
The best time to trek Mount Yunam is from mid-June to mid-September. During this window weather is relatively stable and trails are accessible. Outside this window, the weather conditions are very harsh and heavy snowfall blocks the way.
June
By late June, the snow starts melting and trails become accessible and safe. However, the snow relics are still present on the trail and at higher altitudes. Daytime temperature is around 10°C to 15°C while at nighttime it can drop to below 0°C. The air is crisp and sky is mostly clear.
July to Mid-August
During this time the weather is comfortable but occasional rain can add difficulty. Daytime temperature remains between 12°C and 18°C and nighttime it can be around 3°C to below O°C. The sky is often clear apart from rain time.
Late August to Mid-September
By this time rain goes away and the sky remains clearer. Also, during this window few trekkers attempt Mount Yunam, so for the solitude seekers, it's an ideal time. Temperature remains similar to June-July, from 10°C to 16°C in daytime and at nighttime around 2°C to below 0°C. By mid-September, the arrival of autumn makes terrain dry and barren. After mid-September, snowfall chances increase.
Reach Manali (Himachal Pradesh). You can take a bus or flight (via Bhuntar Airport) to reach Manali. After reaching Manali, proceed 3 km uphill to Vashisht (2,050 m) via auto or on foot. Stay overnight.
Travel to Jispa/Keylong (115 km drive north) along the Leh-Manali highway. You can opt short hikes for acclimatization.
Continue across Baralacha La pass and reach Bharatpur (4,700 m) passing Suraj Tal and Deepak Tal. Bharatpur is basecamp for Mount Yunam expedition.
Trek 4-5 km from Bharatpur over moraine terrain. Acclimatize here with short hikes and gear training.
Move to the summit push. Start at midnight (2 AM) to reach at the time of sunrise. Start ascent to the top (6,100 m). Return to base camp the same day after a 12-14 hr round trip.
Trek back to Bharatpur then drive back to Manali.
Day 1: Arrive in manali
Arriving in Manali, the gateway to the Himalayas, marks the beginning of an exciting adventure. Welcomed by the expedition team at the hotel or guesthouse, participants are introduced to the itinerary and receive a comprehensive briefing.
This session provides crucial information about the upcoming expedition, including safety protocols, route details, and necessary equipment.
After the briefing, participants have the remainder of the day to explore the charming town of Manali. Nestled amidst towering peaks and lush forests, Manali offers a range of experiences, from leisurely strolls along the Beas River to exploring vibrant markets filled with local crafts and delicacies.
Day 2: Manali to Jispa
Embarking on a picturesque journey, today’s route takes us along the awe-inspiring Leh-Manali highway
This legendary road, weaving through high-altitude villages, offers breathtaking vistas of the Himalayan landscape
Once you reach Jispa stay overnight there, This overnight stop provides a chance to acclimate to the higher altitudes and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds us, preparing us for the exhilarating days ahead.

Day 3: Jispa to Bharatpur
Embarking on the next leg of our journey, we set our sights on Bharatpur, Our route leads us through a series of spectacular natural wonders, each one leaving an indelible mark on our adventure.
Our first stop is at Deepak Tal, a crystalline high-altitude lake that shimmers like a jewel amidst the rugged terrain Surrounded by awe-inspiring peaks
Our journey then takes us to the renowned Baralacha La Pass, a high-altitude mountain pass perched at over 4,800 meters (15,750 feet) above sea level.
After Reaching Bharatpur for our designated base camp for the Yunam Peak expedition.

Day 4: Acclimatisation in Bharatpur
This day is dedicated to acclimatization and preparation at the Bharatpur Base Camp, a crucial step in ensuring our safety and success in the upcoming Yunam Peak expedition

Day 6: Acclimatisation Day at Base Camp of Mount Yunam

The day commences with a summit briefing, during which guides and expedition leaders provide essential information about the next day’s ascent.

Day 7: Base Camp to Summit and back to Base Camp
Today marks the pinnacle of our expedition as we embark on the summit push of Yunam Peak.
The path then leads us across sharp rocks and occasional snow patches, requiring a combination of agility and focus to navigate safely.
The culmination of our ascent presents us with a formidable snow wall at the peak. This final stretch is met with a steep and strenuous climb, pushing our physical and mental limits.
Reaching the summit is a moment of triumph and exhilaration. From this vantage point, the panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges unfold in all their grandeur.
Then start your journey back to base camp

Day 8: Base Camp to Bharatpur
We begin by trekking back from the base camp of Yunam Peak to Bharatpur.
Upon reaching Bharatpur, we board our waiting vehicles, ready to embark on a scenic drive back to Manali
The journey provides a final opportunity to soak in the breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas, as we wind our way down through the rugged terrain.

Trek Inclusions
- TRANSPORTATION - Pickup time: 6:30 am at Manali (Last Day: Drive from Bharatpur to Manali at an additional cost of INR 2,000 per person.
- Accommodation – At Base Camp, stay at a local homestay or guest house for one night each, which will give you an insight into the authentic lifestyle of the locals.( INR 5000 per person extra for single sharing throughout the trek )
On Trek stay in a 2-person Vango Halo Pro/A-Shape tent, which is to be shared by two trekkers, built to withstand extreme weather conditions and at the same time making you comfortable after a hard day’s trek. - Camping Equipment – specially designed sleeping bags that can withstand harsh weather conditions, foam mattresses. Other safety gear like microspikes, gaiters, an ice axe, and helmets will be provided.
- Medical Kit – our team will be equipped with an extensive medical kit, which our team is trained and experienced to use. Oxygen cylinders are used after they are thoroughly inspected throughout the Trek. Even campsites have large oxygen cylinders as backups.
- Permission - Forest entry charges for Indian nationals (Additional charges will be applicable for international tourists)
- Meals – Breakfast, packed lunch (on trek days), evening snacks, and dinner will be served. A hearty, delicious, and nutrition-filled Veg meals with egg preparation will be provided throughout the trek. (Jain and Vegan Food can also be arranged on prior notification.)There will be a dedicated Kitchen Tent along with a dining tent, which will have a dining table too.
- Our Team – A highly experienced and AMC-certified Trek Leader who will help ensure that the entire trek goes smoothly and safely while navigating the challenging conditions during the trek, and is skilled enough to navigate any medical emergency that can arise during the trek. Local and route Guides who are well-versed with the region and provide an in-depth insight into the local customs and knowledge of the flora and fauna endemic to the region. A dedicated Kitchen staff, which includes a Cook, a helper, and other support staff. There will also be porters and mules to carry common equipment.
- Cloakroom - We have a cloakroom facility available for extra luggage. Every trekker is permitted to leave their luggage behind at no charge.

- Travel Expenses - Travel expenses from your hometown to the mentioned Pick-Up Point are not included in the trek fee.
From the scheduled pick-up spot to the base camp, we have our own fleet of vehicles like Bolero, Innova, Dezire, or Tempo Traveler (12-seater). This is be shared by trekkers for a pre-decided amount. All vehicles are non-AC. - Personal Equipment - Any personal gear like jackets, shoes, cutlery, or backpacks are not included in the trek fee. We recommend renting them from our Rental Store for an affordable fee. This can be pre-arranged to avoid last-minute hang-ups.
- Offloading - We encourage carrying your backpack to get into the true spirit of trekking. However, if needed, you can opt to offload your personal luggage of up to 12 kgs for an additional cost of INR 500 per bag per day.
- Trek Insurance - A mandatory trek insurance fee is charged in addition to your trek fee. Since most medical insurance doesn’t cover adventure activities, trek insurance offers essential coverage, enhancing your safety without a significant financial burden.
- Buffer day on the trek - We have kept a buffer day on the trek to account for any weather-related delay. If this is utilized, you will need to pay an extra amount to your trek leader.
- Anything apart from inclusions
- Please carry a lunch box for a packed lunch/breakfast to avoid using polythene and Aluminium foil.
