Markha Valley Trek - Cold Desert of Ladakh

Markha Valley Trek is one of the most legendary high-altitude treks in Ladakh. It has a combination of dramatic cold-desert scene, lively village, and a Himalayan pass which is not matched by many other trails. This trek is a different one, unlike many of the routes, which go the same way and this is the reason why you are going to Hemis National Park, on a diverse route that is a fresh experience on a daily basis.

The balance between adventure and culture is a special feature of it. Explore old monasteries, encounter Ladakhi families, cross glacier streams, and observe mountains including Kang Yatze and Dzo Jongo that emerge out of large valleys. The ascent begins in Leh providing plenty of acclimatization before gradually climbing to Konkmaru La Pass (5,260 ⁻ 1). Sightseeing meadows such as Nimaling and homestays contribute to the adventure and make the trek one of the most gratifying in India.

The Markha Valley Trek achieves everything that you desire in it; culture, wildlife, wilderness, and breathtaking Himalayan sceneries.

Major Attractions of Markha Valley Trek

There are several major attractions in the Markha Valley trek that are major.

1. Leh – Gateway to the Trek: The trip starts at Leh, the cultural center of Ladakh. At 11,500 ft, the ideal acclimatization base is found in Leh. Before your departure, visit monasteries, Leh Palace, the local markets, and other adjacent places like Magnetic hill and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib.

2. Hemis National Park: The trip crosses Hemis National Park which is known to have the population of snow leopards and a wide variety of wildlife which include Himalayan blue sheep (bharal), marmots, golden eagles as well as lammergeiers. The conserved region is a special blend of bio-diversity and uncivilized Himalaya scenery.

3. Ladakhi Villages Skiu, Sara and Markha are traditional villages: One of the best moments in the trail is the walk through isolated villages such as Skiu, Sara and Markha. There will be fields of barley, prayer flags, mani walls and ancient monasteries that are hundreds of years old. Homestays offer a true Ladakhi flavor of hospitality, basic food, and serene environment.

4. Nimaling -The Prettiest Campsite. Nimaling is seated in a high meadow that is encircled by snow-crested hills. The camp is usually the prettiest in the trek. It is here that you are able to see the Kang Yatse Peak and have an excellent view of the stars in the sky at night- one of the clearest night skies in India.

5. Kongmaru La Pass (5,260 m) - The most exciting experience during the trek is crossing Kongmaru La. The pass also gives a spectacular scenery of the Ladakh range, colorful rock formation, and dramatic valleys. It is difficult because of the altitude, but when one gets up, it is all worth it.

What to Expect during Markha Valley Trek

It is a moderate to challenging trek and involves a lot of altitude and hours of walking.

  • High Altitude Terrain - It will be over 5,000 m and hence it is necessary to properly acclimatize. The altitude of the area where Leh is will take 2-3 days to get used to and then climb higher.
  • River Crossings - The Markha River is crossed several times, and the water levels change according to the season.
  • Diverse Landscapes - Anticipate that there will be a radical change of dry desert and canyons to barren green fields of barley and meadows.
  • Cultural Immersion - The Buddhist heritage of Ladakh will be understood through ancient monasteries, tea houses, traditional houses and local farmers.
  • Physical Challenge - Average hours of walking are 5-7 hrs/day. Gradual ascent assists in acclimatization, whereas the condition and elevation demand stamina and psychological toughness.
