Located in the Indian Himalayas, Rupin Pass is one of the high-altitude treks that provides immense fun to the trekkers. Covering about 65 km from Dhaula in Uttarakhand to Sangla in Himachal Pradesh, this trek is at an elevation of 15,250 feet. It is famous for its relatively great geographical variety, culture, and perhaps a sequence of wonderful waterfalls that fascinate tourists when exploring the trails.
Rupin Pass trek is famous for the stunning painter-like backdrop and the rapid change in the geographical theme of the trek. Trekkers get to see abundant forest areas, beautiful green pastures, charming terrains, and villages, and snow-clad mountains. The trek is considered moderate to difficult, thus it is preferred for experienced trekker; who is physically fit.
The Civilization of Papuans: the forests that are dense and meadows that are beautiful
It starts from the strolls passing through the areas of oak, rhododendron, and pine trees densely growth. They are filled with wildlife and this path is shaded and cool which inclines to large meadows. These are called ‘thatches’ and they form a major point of interest of the trek; in summers these are a stretch of greenery while in winters they become a stretch of snow.
In the Rupin Pass trek, what gives the much-needed boost to the trekkers is the three drops in the series of waterfalls. These waterfalls are not only beautiful but they are very helpful when it comes to breaks or rests in the hike.
Cultural and mythological values dominate the villages cross with the Rupin Pass trekking geographical area. Sewa and other such villages like the Jhaka also known as the Hanging Village give a real feel of how the people of this region have lived in the past. Certain villages have unique erected structures and celebrations that have remained relevant to this date for the societies that live in them.
The folklore of the region has it that Rupin River is tapu, as is any mountain above a certain altitude to the locals. As per mythology, this river is believed to house quite a few of the deities, and various temples-cum-restaurants en-route are devoted to these gods. Meeting people, listening about their life, gaining experience of their traditions makes the trekking experience richer from the cultural perspective.
Beside trek, we were about the discover that Rupin pass has its own best time for the trek.
The best time to go for the Rupin Pass is during the pre-monsoon season that is May end to June or the late monsoon season that is mid-September to October end. These are usually the periods when the weather is considerably stable while there is no thick snow on the trails. The preferred time for the visit is before the onset of monsoon which is from the beginning of March to the end of April where the beauty of the nature is complemented by the flowers such as rhododendrons etc. The monsoon season on the contrary is characterized by cloudy, hazy and somewhat foggy weather while post monsoon has clear blue sky and a wonderful view of the snow-capped mountains.
Physical Fitness: Due to the general classification of the trek as moderate to difficult it is recommended that one is fit physically. Cardiovascular activities, strength training, and activities that help build endurance should be done.
Acclimatization: Preventing altitude sickness means you have to ensure proper acclimatization to the height changes. It is recommended to adhere strictly to the planned days of travel and incorporate those rest days to allow the body acclimatize.
Packing Essentials: Control your luggage but must pack all the essentials that are necessary like warm clothes, rain wear, good trekking shoes and a top-quality sleeping bag. Trekking poles, crampons if going for the snowy terrains, and the first aid kits should not be forgotten.
Hydration and Nutrition: Due to lack of sufficient oxygen in the atmosphere it is important that most people taking treks drink a lot of water effectively making it through the day. Always have water purification tablets or have a portable water filter. Energy-giving food and, at the same time, having a proper meal is a critical factor in the availability of energy.
Rupin Pass trek is a venture of thrill, stunning vistas and a communion with nature especially the wonderful Himalayas. Right from the entrance through the forest, to the meadows and onward towards the waterfalls and the skyline of mountains this trek is made to leave an indelible mark. The cultural and mythological prosperity of the territory add a bonus to the elaboration, thus making Rupin Pass one of the must-go places for trekking aficionados and lovers of the outdoors.
